business architecture

“Business architecture represents holistic, multidimensional business views of: capabilities, end- to-end value delivery, information, and organizational structure; and the relationships among these business views and strategies, products, policies, initiatives, and stakeholders.” (Business Architecture Guild, 2020)

Business architecture has a focus on organizational business processes, aligning business strategy with value stream and product strategies, organizational structure, and enterprise data. Creating and maintaining a business architecture could help your organization achieve its business objectives and respond to strategic drivers. The process involves steps that include thoroughly mapping a baseline, designing a target architecture for the business, analyzing the gaps between baseline and target architectures, and creating a roadmap by which an organization can methodically achieve it’s desired target architecture.

My approach is a context-dependent application of TOGAF® 10 business and enterprise architecture principles, as well as the Business Architecture Body of Knowledge (BizBok, 2020). My techniques include: capability mapping, information concept and relationship mapping, organizational structure and relationship mapping, process modeling, structural analysis, use case analysis, and value stream mapping, with a broader sensitivity toward a wholistic enterprise architecture for the organization.

Project management is the application of knowledge, skills, tools, and techniques to project activities to meet the requirements of projects (which are temporary endeavors undertaken to create unique products, services, or results. (Project Management Institute)

My approach is a context-dependent application of the PMBOK®Guide Seventh Edition (2021) and the Agile Practice Guide, created in partnership with Agile Alliance®. This translates to a tool belt that includes linear / predictive techniques, adaptive / agile (especially Scrum and Kanban) methodologies, and hybrid approaches that can be used or combined as required by each project. My approach is also informed by my training in Design Thinking and Human-Centered Design at the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School, as well as my direct work in an Agile project team developing, deploying, and commercializing health IP in the Johns Hopkins Medicine Technology Innovation Center.

It involves the management of multiple, related projects and the navigation of complex activities that span functions, organizations, regions or cultures and to align results with organizational goals. (Project Management Institute)

My approach is a context-dependent application of the Standard for Program Management Fourth Edition (2017) and the Standard for Portfolio Management Fourth Edition (2017).
